The New Birth
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named A John 7:50; 19:39Nicodemus, a B Luke 23:13; John 7:26, 48ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “A Matt 23:7; John 3:26Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these 1 Or attesting miracles B John 2:11signs that You do unless C John 9:33; 10:38; 14:10f; Acts 2:22; 10:38God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one A 2 Cor 5:17; 1 Pet 1:23is born 1 Or from above again he cannot see B Matt 19:24; 21:31; Mark 9:47; 10:14f; John 3:5the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of A Ezek 36:25-27; Eph 5:26; Titus 3:5water and the Spirit he cannot enter into B Matt 19:24; 21:31; Mark 9:47; 10:14f; John 3:3the kingdom of God. A John 1:13; 1 Cor 15:50That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born 1 Or from above again.’ A Ps 135:7; Eccl 11:5; Ezek 37:9The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10  Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you A Luke 2:46; 5:17; Acts 5:34the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 11  Truly, truly, I say to you, A John 1:18; 7:16f; 8:26, 28; 12:49; 14:24we speak of what we know and B John 3:32testify of what we have seen, and B John 3:32you do not accept our testimony. 12  If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13  A Deut 30:12; Prov 30:4; Acts 2:34; Rom 10:6; Eph 4:9No one has ascended into heaven, but B John 3:31; 6:38, 42He who descended from heaven: C Matt 8:20the Son of Man. 14  As A Num 21:9Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must B Matt 8:20the Son of Man C John 8:28; 12:34be lifted up; 15  so that whoever 1 Or believes in Him will have eternal life believes will A John 20:31; 1 John 5:11-13in Him have eternal life.
16  “For God so A Rom 5:8; Eph 2:4; 2 Thess 2:16; 1 John 4:10; Rev 1:5loved the world, that He B Rom 8:32; 1 John 4:9gave His 1 Or unique, only one of His kindC John 1:18; 3:18; 1 John 4:9only begotten Son, that whoever D John 3:36; 6:40; 11:25fbelieves in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17  For God A John 3:34; 5:36, 38; 6:29, 38, 57; 7:29; 8:42; 10:36; 11:42; 17:3, 8, 18, 21, 23, 25; 20:21did not send the Son into the world B Luke 19:10; John 8:15; 12:47; 1 John 4:14to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18  A Mark 16:16; John 5:24He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of B John 1:18; 1 John 4:9the 1 Or unique, only one of His kindonly begotten Son of God. 19  This is the judgment, that A John 1:4; 8:12; 9:5; 12:46the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for B John 7:7their deeds were evil. 20  A John 3:20, 21; Eph 5:11, 13For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21  But he who A 1 John 1:6practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
John’s Last Testimony
22  After these things Jesus and His A John 2:2disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and B John 4:1, 2baptizing. 23  John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized 24 for A Matt 4:12; 14:3; Mark 6:17; Luke 3:20John had not yet been thrown into prison.
25  Therefore there arose a discussion on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about A John 2:6purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “A Matt 23:7; John 3:2Rabbi, He who was with you B John 1:28beyond the Jordan, to whom you C John 1:7have testified, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.” 27  John answered and said, “A 1 Cor 4:7; Heb 5:4A man can receive nothing unless it B James 1:17has been given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves 1 Lit testify for me are my witnesses that I said, ‘A John 1:20, 23I am not the 2 I.e. MessiahChrist,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is A Matt 9:15; 25:1the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this B John 15:11; 16:24; 17:13; Phil 2:2; 1 John 1:4; 2 John 12joy of mine has been made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 A Matt 28:18; John 3:13; 8:23He who comes from above is above all, B 1 Cor 15:47; 1 John 4:5he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. A Matt 28:18; John 3:13; 8:23He who comes from heaven is above all. 32  What He has seen and heard, of that He A John 3:11testifies; and A John 3:11no one receives His testimony. 33 He who has received His testimony A John 6:27; Rom 4:11; 15:28; 1 Cor 9:2; 2 Cor 1:22; Eph 1:13; 4:30; 2 Tim 2:19; Rev 7:3-8has set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For He whom God has A John 3:17sent speaks the words of God; 1 Lit because He does not give the Spirit by measure B Matt 12:18; Luke 4:18; Acts 1:2; 10:38for He gives the Spirit without measure. 35  A Matt 28:18; John 5:20; 17:2The Father loves the Son and B Matt 11:27; Luke 10:22has given all things into His hand. 36 He who A John 3:16believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who B Acts 14:2; Heb 3:18does not 1 Or believe obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Jesus Goes to Galilee
Therefore when A Luke 7:13the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and B John 3:22, 26; 1 Cor 1:17baptizing more disciples than John (although A John 3:22, 26; 1 Cor 1:17Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His B John 2:2disciples were), He left A John 3:22Judea and went away B John 2:11fagain into Galilee. And He had to pass through A Luke 9:52Samaria. So He *came to a city of A Luke 9:52Samaria called Sychar, near B Gen 33:19; Josh 24:32the parcel of ground that C Gen 48:22; John 4:12Jacob gave to his son Joseph; and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about 1 Perhaps 6 p.m. Roman time or noon Jewish timethe sixth hour.
The Woman of Samaria
There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus *said to her, Give Me a drink.” For His A John 2:2disciples had gone away into B John 4:5, 39the city to buy food. Therefore the A Luke 9:52Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For B Ezra 4:3-6, 11ff; Matt 10:5; John 8:48; Acts 10:28Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10  Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you A Jer 2:13; John 4:14; 7:37f; Rev 7:17; 21:6; 22:1, 17living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that A Jer 2:13; John 4:14; 7:37f; Rev 7:17; 21:6; 22:1, 17living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who A John 4:6gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13  Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14  but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him A John 6:35; 7:38shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to B Matt 25:46; John 6:27eternal life.”
15 The woman *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, A John 6:35give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 16 He *said to her, Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18  for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, I perceive that You are A Matt 21:11; Luke 7:16, 39; 24:19; John 6:14; 7:40; 9:17a prophet. 20  A Gen 33:20; John 4:12Our fathers worshiped in B Deut 11:29; Josh 8:33this mountain, and you people say that C Luke 9:53in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21  Jesus *said to her, Woman, believe Me, A John 4:23; 5:25, 28; 16:2, 32an hour is coming when B Mal 1:11; 1 Tim 2:8neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22  A 2 Kin 17:28-41You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for B Is 2:3; Rom 3:1f; 9:4fsalvation is from the Jews. 23  But A John 4:21; 5:25, 28; 16:2, 32an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father B Phil 3:3in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24  God is 1 Or Spirit spirit, and those who worship Him must worship A Phil 3:3in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that A Dan 9:25; John 1:41Messiah is coming (B Matt 1:16; 27:17, 22; Luke 2:11He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26  Jesus *said to her, A John 8:24, 28, 58; 9:37; 13:19I who speak to you am He.
27 At this point His A John 4:8disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” 28  So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men, 29 Come, see a man A John 4:17fwho told me all the things that I have done; B Matt 12:23; John 7:26, 31this is not 1 I.e. the Messiahthe Christ, is it?” 30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
31  Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “A Matt 23:7; 26:25, 49; Mark 9:5; 11:21; 14:45; John 1:38, 49; 3:2, 26; 6:25; 9:2; 11:8Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33  So the A Luke 6:13-16; John 1:40-49; 2:2disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34  Jesus *said to them, “My food is to A John 5:30; 6:38do the will of Him who sent Me and to B John 5:36; 17:4; 19:28, 30accomplish His work. 35  Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white A Matt 9:37, 38; Luke 10:2for harvest. 36  Already he who reaps is receiving A Prov 11:18; 1 Cor 9:17fwages and is gathering B Rom 1:13fruit for C Matt 19:29; John 3:36; 4:14; 5:24; Rom 2:7; 6:23life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37  For in this case the saying is true, ‘A Job 31:8; Mic 6:15One sows and another reaps.’ 38  I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”
The Samaritans
39 From A John 4:5, 30that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “B John 4:29He told me all the things that I have done.” 40  So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41  Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed A Matt 1:21; Luke 2:11; John 1:29; Acts 5:31; 13:23; 1 Tim 4:10; 1 John 4:14the Savior of the world.”
43  After A John 4:40the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that A Matt 13:57; Mark 6:4; Luke 4:24a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45  So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, A John 2:23having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.
Healing a Nobleman’s Son
46  Therefore He came again to A John 2:1Cana of Galilee B John 2:9where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at C Luke 4:23; John 2:12Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come A John 4:3, 54out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48  So Jesus said to him, Unless you people see 1 Or attesting miracles A Dan 4:2f; 6:27; Matt 24:24; Mark 13:22; Acts 2:19, 22, 43; 4:30; 5:12; 6:8; 7:36; 14:3; 15:12; Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 1:22; 2 Cor 12:12; 2 Thess 2:9; Heb 2:4signs and A Dan 4:2f; 6:27; Matt 24:24; Mark 13:22; Acts 2:19, 22, 43; 4:30; 5:12; 6:8; 7:36; 14:3; 15:12; Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 1:22; 2 Cor 12:12; 2 Thess 2:9; Heb 2:4wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50  Jesus *said to him, A Matt 8:13Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. 51 As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his 1 Or boy son was living. 52  So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the 1 Perhaps 7 p.m. Roman time or 1 p.m. Jewish timeseventh hour the fever left him.” 53  So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives; and he himself believed and A Acts 11:14his whole household. 54  This is again a A John 2:11second 1 Or attesting miracle sign that Jesus performed when He had B John 4:45fcome out of Judea into Galilee.
