The Testimony of John
19  This is A John 1:7the testimony of John, when B John 2:18, 20; 5:10, 15f, 18; 6:41, 52; 7:1, 11, 13, 15, 35; 8:22, 48, 52, 57; 9:18, 22; 10:24, 31, 33the Jews sent to him priests and Levites C Matt 15:1from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “A Luke 3:15f; John 3:28I am not 1 I.e. the Messiahthe Christ.” 21 They asked him, “What then? Are you A Matt 11:14; 16:14Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you B Deut 18:15, 18; Matt 21:11; John 1:25the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22  Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am A Is 40:3; Matt 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘ Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24  Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the 1 I.e. MessiahChrist, nor Elijah, nor A Deut 18:15, 18; Matt 21:11; John 1:21the Prophet?” 26  John answered them saying, “A Matt 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; Acts 1:5I baptize 1 The Gr here can be translated in, with or by in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27  It is A Matt 3:11; John 1:30He who comes after me, the B Matt 3:11; Mark 1:7; Luke 3:16thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28  These things took place in Bethany A John 3:26; 10:40beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, A Is 53:7; John 1:36; Acts 8:32; 1 Pet 1:19; Rev 5:6, 8, 12f; 6:1the Lamb of God who B Matt 1:21; 1 John 3:5takes away the sin of the world! 30  This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘A Matt 3:11; John 1:27After me comes a Man who 1 Lit has become before me has a higher rank than I, B John 1:15for He existed before me.’ 31 I did not recognize 1 I.e. as the MessiahHim, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing 2 The Gr here can be translated in, with or by in water.” 32  John A John 1:7testified saying, “B Matt 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not recognize 1 I.e. as the MessiahHim, but He who sent me to baptize 2 The Gr here can be translated in, with or by in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, A Matt 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; Acts 1:5this is the One who baptizes 2 The Gr here can be translated in, with or by in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is A Matt 4:3; John 1:49the Son of God.”
Jesus’ Public Ministry, First Converts
35  Again A John 1:29the next day John was standing 1 Lit and with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, A John 1:29the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, What do you seek?” They said to Him, “A Matt 23:7f; John 1:49Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the 1 Perhaps 10 a.m. (Roman time)tenth hour. 40  A Matt 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5:2-11; John 1:40-42One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He *found first his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the A Dan 9:25; John 4:25Messiah” (which translated means 1 Gr Anointed One Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of 1 Gr Joannes A Matt 16:17; John 21:15-17John; you shall be called B 1 Cor 1:12; 3:22; 9:5; 15:5; Gal 1:18; 2:9, 11, 14Cephas (which is translated 2 I.e. Rock or StoneC Matt 16:18Peter).
43  A John 1:29, 35The next day He purposed to go into B Matt 4:12; John 1:28; 2:11Galilee, and He *found C Matt 10:3; John 1:44-48; 6:5, 7; 12:21f; 14:8fPhilip. And Jesus *said to him, D Matt 8:22Follow Me.” 44  Now A Matt 10:3; John 1:44-48; 6:5, 7; 12:21f; 14:8fPhilip was from B Matt 11:21Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. 45  A Matt 10:3; John 1:44-48; 6:5, 7; 12:21f; 14:8fPhilip *found B John 1:46-49; 21:2Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom C Luke 24:27Moses in the Law and also C Luke 24:27the Prophets wroteJesus of D Matt 2:23Nazareth, E Luke 2:48; 3:23; 4:22; John 6:42the son of Joseph.” 46  Nathanael said to him, “A John 7:41, 52Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” B Matt 10:3; John 1:44-48; 6:5, 7; 12:21f; 14:8fPhilip *said to him, “Come and see.” 47  Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, Behold, an A Rom 9:4Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48  Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, Before A Matt 10:3; John 1:44-48; 6:5, 7; 12:21f; 14:8fPhilip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49  Nathanael answered Him, “A John 1:38Rabbi, You are B John 1:34the Son of God; You are the C Matt 2:2; 27:42; Mark 15:32; John 12:13King of Israel.” 50  Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see A Ezek 1:1; Matt 3:16; Luke 3:21; Acts 7:56; 10:11; Rev 19:11the heavens opened and B Gen 28:12the angels of God ascending and descending on C Matt 8:20the Son of Man.”

Miracle at Cana
On A John 1:29, 35, 43the third day there was a wedding in B John 2:11; 4:46; 21:2Cana of Galilee, and the C Matt 12:46mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His A John 1:40-49; 2:12, 17, 22; 3:22; 4:2, 8, 27; 6:8, 12, 16, 22, 24, 60f, 66; 7:3; 8:31disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus *said to her, A John 19:26Woman, 1 Lit what to Me and to you (a Hebrew idiom)B Matt 8:29what does that have to do with us? C John 7:6, 8, 30; 8:20My hour has not yet come.” His A Matt 12:46mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were six stone waterpots set there A Mark 7:3f; John 3:25for the Jewish custom of purification, containing 1 Lit two or three measures twenty or thirty gallons each. Jesus *said to them, Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. And He *said to them, Draw some out now and take it to the 1 Or steward headwaiter.” So they took it to him. When the headwaiter tasted the water A John 4:46which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people A Matt 24:49; Luke 12:45; Acts 2:15; 1 Cor 11:21; Eph 5:18; 1 Thess 5:7; Rev 17:2, 6have 1 Or have become drunk drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11  This beginning of His 1 Or attesting miracles; i.e. one which points to the supernatural power of God in redeeming graceA John 2:23; 3:2; 4:54; 6:2, 14, 26, 30; 7:31; 9:16; 10:41; 11:47; 12:18, 37; 20:30signs Jesus did in Cana of B John 1:43Galilee, and manifested His C John 1:14glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
12  After this He went down to A Matt 4:13Capernaum, He and His B Matt 12:46mother and His B Matt 12:46brothers and His C John 2:2disciples; and they stayed there a few days.
First Passover—Cleansing the Temple
13  A Deut 16:1-6; John 5:1; 6:4; 11:55The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus B Luke 2:41; John 2:23went up to Jerusalem. 14  A John 2:14-16: Matt 21:12ff; Mark 11:15, 17; Luke 19:45f; Mal 3:1ffAnd He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling A Matt 21:12the doves He said, Take these things away; stop making B Luke 2:49My Father’s house a 1 Lit house place of business.” 17 His A John 2:2disciples remembered that it was written, “B Ps 69:9 Zeal for Your house will consume me.” 18  A John 1:19The Jews then said to Him, “B Matt 12:38What sign do You show us 1 Lit that You do these as your authority for doing these things?” 19  Jesus answered them, A Matt 26:61; 27:40; Mark 14:58; 15:29; Acts 6:14Destroy this 1 Or sanctuary temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20  A John 1:19The Jews then said, “It took B Ezra 5:16forty-six years to build this 1 Or sanctuary temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of A 1 Cor 6:19the 1 Or sanctuary temple of His body. 22  So when He was raised from the dead, His A John 2:2disciples B Luke 24:8; John 2:17; 12:16; 14:26remembered that He said this; and they believed C Ps 16:10; Luke 24:26f; John 20:9; Acts 13:33the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
23  Now when He was in Jerusalem at A John 2:13the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, B John 2:11observing His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for A Acts 1:24; 15:8He knew all men, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, A Matt 9:4; John 1:42, 47; 6:61, 64; 13:11for He Himself knew what was in man.

The New Birth
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named A John 7:50; 19:39Nicodemus, a B Luke 23:13; John 7:26, 48ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “A Matt 23:7; John 3:26Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these 1 Or attesting miracles B John 2:11signs that You do unless C John 9:33; 10:38; 14:10f; Acts 2:22; 10:38God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one A 2 Cor 5:17; 1 Pet 1:23is born 1 Or from above again he cannot see B Matt 19:24; 21:31; Mark 9:47; 10:14f; John 3:5the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of A Ezek 36:25-27; Eph 5:26; Titus 3:5water and the Spirit he cannot enter into B Matt 19:24; 21:31; Mark 9:47; 10:14f; John 3:3the kingdom of God. A John 1:13; 1 Cor 15:50That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born 1 Or from above again.’ A Ps 135:7; Eccl 11:5; Ezek 37:9The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10  Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you A Luke 2:46; 5:17; Acts 5:34the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 11  Truly, truly, I say to you, A John 1:18; 7:16f; 8:26, 28; 12:49; 14:24we speak of what we know and B John 3:32testify of what we have seen, and B John 3:32you do not accept our testimony. 12  If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13  A Deut 30:12; Prov 30:4; Acts 2:34; Rom 10:6; Eph 4:9No one has ascended into heaven, but B John 3:31; 6:38, 42He who descended from heaven: C Matt 8:20the Son of Man. 14  As A Num 21:9Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must B Matt 8:20the Son of Man C John 8:28; 12:34be lifted up; 15  so that whoever 1 Or believes in Him will have eternal life believes will A John 20:31; 1 John 5:11-13in Him have eternal life.
16  “For God so A Rom 5:8; Eph 2:4; 2 Thess 2:16; 1 John 4:10; Rev 1:5loved the world, that He B Rom 8:32; 1 John 4:9gave His 1 Or unique, only one of His kindC John 1:18; 3:18; 1 John 4:9only begotten Son, that whoever D John 3:36; 6:40; 11:25fbelieves in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17  For God A John 3:34; 5:36, 38; 6:29, 38, 57; 7:29; 8:42; 10:36; 11:42; 17:3, 8, 18, 21, 23, 25; 20:21did not send the Son into the world B Luke 19:10; John 8:15; 12:47; 1 John 4:14to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18  A Mark 16:16; John 5:24He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of B John 1:18; 1 John 4:9the 1 Or unique, only one of His kindonly begotten Son of God. 19  This is the judgment, that A John 1:4; 8:12; 9:5; 12:46the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for B John 7:7their deeds were evil. 20  A John 3:20, 21; Eph 5:11, 13For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21  But he who A 1 John 1:6practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
John’s Last Testimony
22  After these things Jesus and His A John 2:2disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and B John 4:1, 2baptizing. 23  John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized 24 for A Matt 4:12; 14:3; Mark 6:17; Luke 3:20John had not yet been thrown into prison.
25  Therefore there arose a discussion on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about A John 2:6purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “A Matt 23:7; John 3:2Rabbi, He who was with you B John 1:28beyond the Jordan, to whom you C John 1:7have testified, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.” 27  John answered and said, “A 1 Cor 4:7; Heb 5:4A man can receive nothing unless it B James 1:17has been given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves 1 Lit testify for me are my witnesses that I said, ‘A John 1:20, 23I am not the 2 I.e. MessiahChrist,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is A Matt 9:15; 25:1the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this B John 15:11; 16:24; 17:13; Phil 2:2; 1 John 1:4; 2 John 12joy of mine has been made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 A Matt 28:18; John 3:13; 8:23He who comes from above is above all, B 1 Cor 15:47; 1 John 4:5he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. A Matt 28:18; John 3:13; 8:23He who comes from heaven is above all. 32  What He has seen and heard, of that He A John 3:11testifies; and A John 3:11no one receives His testimony. 33 He who has received His testimony A John 6:27; Rom 4:11; 15:28; 1 Cor 9:2; 2 Cor 1:22; Eph 1:13; 4:30; 2 Tim 2:19; Rev 7:3-8has set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For He whom God has A John 3:17sent speaks the words of God; 1 Lit because He does not give the Spirit by measure B Matt 12:18; Luke 4:18; Acts 1:2; 10:38for He gives the Spirit without measure. 35  A Matt 28:18; John 5:20; 17:2The Father loves the Son and B Matt 11:27; Luke 10:22has given all things into His hand. 36 He who A John 3:16believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who B Acts 14:2; Heb 3:18does not 1 Or believe obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Jesus Goes to Galilee
Therefore when A Luke 7:13the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and B John 3:22, 26; 1 Cor 1:17baptizing more disciples than John (although A John 3:22, 26; 1 Cor 1:17Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His B John 2:2disciples were), He left A John 3:22Judea and went away B John 2:11fagain into Galilee. And He had to pass through A Luke 9:52Samaria. So He *came to a city of A Luke 9:52Samaria called Sychar, near B Gen 33:19; Josh 24:32the parcel of ground that C Gen 48:22; John 4:12Jacob gave to his son Joseph; and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about 1 Perhaps 6 p.m. Roman time or noon Jewish timethe sixth hour.
The Woman of Samaria
There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus *said to her, Give Me a drink.” For His A John 2:2disciples had gone away into B John 4:5, 39the city to buy food. Therefore the A Luke 9:52Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For B Ezra 4:3-6, 11ff; Matt 10:5; John 8:48; Acts 10:28Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10  Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you A Jer 2:13; John 4:14; 7:37f; Rev 7:17; 21:6; 22:1, 17living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that A Jer 2:13; John 4:14; 7:37f; Rev 7:17; 21:6; 22:1, 17living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who A John 4:6gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13  Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14  but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him A John 6:35; 7:38shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to B Matt 25:46; John 6:27eternal life.”
15 The woman *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, A John 6:35give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 16 He *said to her, Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18  for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, I perceive that You are A Matt 21:11; Luke 7:16, 39; 24:19; John 6:14; 7:40; 9:17a prophet. 20  A Gen 33:20; John 4:12Our fathers worshiped in B Deut 11:29; Josh 8:33this mountain, and you people say that C Luke 9:53in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21  Jesus *said to her, Woman, believe Me, A John 4:23; 5:25, 28; 16:2, 32an hour is coming when B Mal 1:11; 1 Tim 2:8neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22  A 2 Kin 17:28-41You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for B Is 2:3; Rom 3:1f; 9:4fsalvation is from the Jews. 23  But A John 4:21; 5:25, 28; 16:2, 32an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father B Phil 3:3in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24  God is 1 Or Spirit spirit, and those who worship Him must worship A Phil 3:3in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that A Dan 9:25; John 1:41Messiah is coming (B Matt 1:16; 27:17, 22; Luke 2:11He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26  Jesus *said to her, A John 8:24, 28, 58; 9:37; 13:19I who speak to you am He.
27 At this point His A John 4:8disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” 28  So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men, 29 Come, see a man A John 4:17fwho told me all the things that I have done; B Matt 12:23; John 7:26, 31this is not 1 I.e. the Messiahthe Christ, is it?” 30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
31  Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “A Matt 23:7; 26:25, 49; Mark 9:5; 11:21; 14:45; John 1:38, 49; 3:2, 26; 6:25; 9:2; 11:8Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33  So the A Luke 6:13-16; John 1:40-49; 2:2disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34  Jesus *said to them, “My food is to A John 5:30; 6:38do the will of Him who sent Me and to B John 5:36; 17:4; 19:28, 30accomplish His work. 35  Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white A Matt 9:37, 38; Luke 10:2for harvest. 36  Already he who reaps is receiving A Prov 11:18; 1 Cor 9:17fwages and is gathering B Rom 1:13fruit for C Matt 19:29; John 3:36; 4:14; 5:24; Rom 2:7; 6:23life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37  For in this case the saying is true, ‘A Job 31:8; Mic 6:15One sows and another reaps.’ 38  I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”
The Samaritans
39 From A John 4:5, 30that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “B John 4:29He told me all the things that I have done.” 40  So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41  Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed A Matt 1:21; Luke 2:11; John 1:29; Acts 5:31; 13:23; 1 Tim 4:10; 1 John 4:14the Savior of the world.”
43  After A John 4:40the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that A Matt 13:57; Mark 6:4; Luke 4:24a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45  So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, A John 2:23having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.
Healing a Nobleman’s Son
46  Therefore He came again to A John 2:1Cana of Galilee B John 2:9where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at C Luke 4:23; John 2:12Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come A John 4:3, 54out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48  So Jesus said to him, Unless you people see 1 Or attesting miracles A Dan 4:2f; 6:27; Matt 24:24; Mark 13:22; Acts 2:19, 22, 43; 4:30; 5:12; 6:8; 7:36; 14:3; 15:12; Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 1:22; 2 Cor 12:12; 2 Thess 2:9; Heb 2:4signs and A Dan 4:2f; 6:27; Matt 24:24; Mark 13:22; Acts 2:19, 22, 43; 4:30; 5:12; 6:8; 7:36; 14:3; 15:12; Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 1:22; 2 Cor 12:12; 2 Thess 2:9; Heb 2:4wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “1 Or Lord Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50  Jesus *said to him, A Matt 8:13Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. 51 As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his 1 Or boy son was living. 52  So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the 1 Perhaps 7 p.m. Roman time or 1 p.m. Jewish timeseventh hour the fever left him.” 53  So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives; and he himself believed and A Acts 11:14his whole household. 54  This is again a A John 2:11second 1 Or attesting miracle sign that Jesus performed when He had B John 4:45fcome out of Judea into Galilee.

The Healing at Bethesda
After these things there was A Deut 16:1; John 2:13a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is in Jerusalem by A Neh 3:1, 32; 12:39the sheep gate a pool, which is called B John 19:13, 17, 20; 20:16; Acts 21:40; Rev 9:11; 16:16in 1 I.e. Jewish AramaicHebrew 2 Some early mss read Bethsaida or Bethzatha Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [1 Early mss do not contain the remainder of v 3, nor v 4waiting for the moving of the waters; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] A man was there who had been 1 Lit in his sickness ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He *said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when A John 5:4the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus *said to him, A Matt 9:6; Mark 2:11; Luke 5:24Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.
A John 9:14Now it was the Sabbath on that day. 10  So A John 1:19; 5:15, 16, 18the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and B Neh 13:19; Jer 17:21f; Matt 12:2; Luke 6:2; John 7:23; 9:16it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, Pick up your pallet and walk.’ 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, Pick up your pallet and walk?” 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14  Afterward Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, Behold, you have become well; do not A Mark 2:5; John 8:11sin anymore, B Ezra 9:14so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and told A John 1:19; 5:16, 18the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason A John 1:19; 5:10, 15, 18the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
Jesus’ Equality with God
18 For this reason therefore A John 1:19; 5:15, 16the Jews B John 5:16; 7:1were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, C John 10:33; 19:7making Himself equal with God.
19  Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, A Matt 26:39; John 5:30; 6:38; 8:28; 12:49; 14:10the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever 1 Lit that One the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20  A Matt 3:17; John 3:35; 2 Pet 1:17For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him B John 14:12greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21  For just as the Father raises the dead and A Rom 4:17; 8:11gives them life, even so B John 11:25the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22  For not even the Father judges anyone, but A John 5:27; 9:39; Acts 10:42; 17:31He has given all judgment to the Son, 23  so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. A Luke 10:16; 1 John 2:23He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24  Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and A John 3:18; 12:44; 20:31; 1 John 5:13believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and B John 3:18does not come into judgment, but has C 1 John 3:14passed out of death into life.
Two Resurrections
25  Truly, truly, I say to you, A John 4:21, 23; 5:28an hour is coming and now is, when B Luke 15:24the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who C John 6:60; 8:43, 47; 9:27hear will live. 26  For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He A John 1:4; 6:57gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27  and He gave Him authority to A John 9:39; Acts 10:42; 17:31execute judgment, because He is 1 Or a son of man the Son of Man. 28  Do not marvel at this; for A John 4:21an hour is coming, in which B John 11:24; 1 Cor 15:52all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29  and will come forth; A Dan 12:2; Matt 25:46; Acts 24:15those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
30  A John 5:19I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and B John 8:16My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but C John 4:34; 6:38the will of Him who sent Me.
31  A John 8:14If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not 1 I.e. admissible as legal evidencetrue. 32  There is A John 5:37another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
Witness of John
33  You have sent to John, and he A John 1:7, 15, 19, 32; 3:26-30has testified to the truth. 34  But A John 5:32; 1 John 5:9the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35  He was A 2 Sam 21:17; 2 Pet 1:19the lamp that was burning and was shining and you B Mark 1:5were willing to rejoice for 1 Lit an hour a while in his light.
Witness of Works
36  But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for A Matt 11:4; John 2:23; 10:25, 38; 14:11; 15:24the works which the Father has given Me B John 4:34to accomplish—the very works that I dotestify about Me, that the Father C John 3:17has sent Me.
Witness of the Father
37  And the Father who sent Me, A Matt 3:17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22; 24:27; John 8:18; 1 John 5:9He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38  You do not have A 1 John 2:14His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He B John 3:17sent.
Witness of the Scripture
39  1 Or (a command) Search the Scriptures! A John 7:52; Rom 2:17ffYou search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is B Luke 24:25, 27; Acts 13:27these that testify about Me; 40  and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41  A John 5:44; 7:18; 1 Thess 2:6I do not receive glory from men; 42  but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43  I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; A Matt 24:5if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44  How can you believe, when you A John 5:41receive 1 Or honor or fame glory from one another and you do not seek B Rom 2:29the 1 Or honor or fame glory that is from C John 17:3; 1 Tim 1:17the one and only God? 45  Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is A John 9:28; Rom 2:17ffMoses, in whom you have set your hope. 46  For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for A Luke 24:27he wrote about Me. 47  But A Luke 16:29, 31if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
